چکیده

Optical microcavities are open billiards for light in which electromagnetic waves can, however, be confined by total internal reflection at dielectric boundaries. These resonators enrich the class of model systems in the field of quantum chaos and are an ideal testing ground for the correspondence of ray and wave dynamics that, typically, is taken for granted. Using phase-space methods we show that this assumption has to be corrected towards the long-wavelength limit. Generalizing the concept of Husimi functions to dielectric interfaces, we find that curved interfaces require a semiclassical correction of Fresnel’s law due to an interference effect called Goos-Hänchen shift. It is accompanied by the so-called Fresnel filtering which, in turn, corrects Snell’s law. These two contributions are especially important near the critical angle. They are of similar magnitude and correspond to ray displacements in independent phase-space directions that can be incorporated in an adjusted reflection law. We show that deviations from ray-wave correspondence can be straightforwardly understood with the resulting adjusted reflection law and discuss its consequences for the phase-space dynamics in optical billiards.

Angular momentum localization in oval billiards

Angular momentum ceases to be the preferred basis for identifying dynamical localization in an oval billiard at large excentricity. We give reasons for this, and comment on the classical phase-space structure that is encoded in the wave functions of “leaky” dielectric resonators with oval cross section. Geometric optics is an important engineering tool because of its explanatory and predictive ...

Fractal Weyl law for chaotic microcavities: Fresnel's laws imply multifractal scattering.

We demonstrate that the harmonic inversion technique is a powerful tool to analyze the spectral properties of optical microcavities. As an interesting example we study the statistical properties of complex frequencies of the fully chaotic microstadium. We show that the conjectured fractal Weyl law for open chaotic systems [Lu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 154101 (2003)] is valid for dielectric microcav...

Parallel Photonic Quantum Computation Assisted by Quantum Dots in One-Side Optical Microcavities

Universal quantum logic gates are important elements for a quantum computer. In contrast to previous constructions on one degree of freedom (DOF) of quantum systems, we investigate the possibility of parallel quantum computations dependent on two DOFs of photon systems. We construct deterministic hyper-controlled-not (hyper-CNOT) gates operating on the spatial-mode and the polarization DOFs of ...

The presence of chaos and quantum chaos is shown in two different nuclear systems. We analyze the chaotic behaviour of the classical SU(2) Yang–Mills– Higgs system, and then we study quantum chaos in the nuclear shell model calculating the spectral statistics of A = 46–50 atomic nuclei.

Semiconductor Optical Microcavities for Chip-Based Cavity QED

Optical microcavities can be characterized by two key quantities: an effective mode volume Veff, which describes the per photon electric field strength within the cavity, and a quality factor Q, which describes the photon lifetime within the cavity. Cavities with a small Veff and a high Q offer the promise for applications in nonlinear optics, sensing, and cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity...
